Inkas Wasi visits Southeast
Peruvian Performers Inkas Wasi visited Southeast on Tuesday, October 19. Third and fourth grade students listened as performers told Incan folktales and shared Incan and other South American dances. These students had an opportunity to explore beautiful woven garments, hand-made instruments and other artifacts. At the end of the day, the Southeast community gathered in the gym to see Inkas Wasi perform for the whole school. The brightly-costumed performers sang and played their remarkable instruments while students and staff clapped and sometimes sang along. Students watched the costumed dancers joyfully spin around the gym. What a wonderful afternoon learning about an ancient culture. As the assembly ended, the performers were raving about Southeast students as much as we were cheering for them. They noted that Southeast students were engaged and participating and they loved performing for us!

Walktober Fun
Walktober 2010 is a series of 99 hikes throughout the month of October in Mansfield and surrounding towns. Spend some time this weekend revisiting an old haunt or exploring a new place with guides who can provide information about anything from the history to botany along the way. Find the brochure by going to The Last Green Valley website tlgv.org and clicking on Walktober 2010. The brochure lists all the walks with the day and time, short descriptions, locations and directions along with a key indicating the difficulty level and length of the walk. Some walks are wheelchair and/or stroller accessible and many are geared toward school-aged children. Look for special hikes that welcome leashed dogs or a chance to use your kayak, canoe or bike. Hike titles are intriguing: Main Street Math Trail, I Spy History, Where the Buffalo Roam, Hiking under a Dark Sky, Reading the Woods, Footprints and Pawprints, Run of the Mill and many more. To quote the Walktober brochure, "Stretch your legs and your mind. Enjoy all the season has to offer in the The Last Green Valley--one of the most beautiful places on earth!"

Aim for the Goal!
Southeast students and staff gathered today in the gym to talk about goals. Jack and Medwyn helped Ethan see that goals are not just for soccer games. They reminded Ethan that he had accomplished his goal of making new friends this summer! With Mr. Warinsky's help and some guidance from other Southeast teachers, Ethan set a goal to read a little bit more each night so he could improve his reading. Ethan knows how to set challenging goals and take small steps to reach the goal. Southeast students headed back to class with smiles on their faces and ideas for goals that they would like to set for themselves. Check out the bulletin boards in the front hallway to see the great goals that students are setting for themselves.
